Sounds of Eighty Six, Volume 49

It's been a long time and this is only our third show of the year, so we'll have to start off with apologies for that! We have meant to record more often but life just seems to keep on getting in the way.

There's new stuff from the likes of New Cottee, Penguin Cafe, Molly Nilsson and John Stammers as well as quite a lot of older stuff.

We hope to be back again in 3-4 weeks and try and get a few more shows out before the end of the year, thanks for your patience and enjoy listening.

Track Brewery, Vertical Drinks & Manchester Beer Week presents Eighty Six

This summer marks ten years' since Jeffo, Jif and TC got together and started DJing at Jam Street Cafe in Chorlton. When the owner Rik Garner (First Chop Brewing) contacted TC and said 'I want DJ's who play stuff like Shuggie Otis, do you fancy it?'.... they did! and from this they made Jam St their home and went on to host a weekly show on Manchester's Unity Radio.

The ten years' since have seen numbers swelled with the addition of Bugged Out! legend Rob Bright who was a regular guest at Jam St. Various residencies have included The Spoon Inn and Outlaw's Yacht Club and stints on Unity FM, Purple Radio and our own irregular podcast from Jif basement studio. We've had fun doing lots of one off gigs including Nado, Electriks, regular bank holiday events at The Beagle (our second home) and hosting rooms at IMBC, Brewer's Market, Magic Rock Social and many more.  Even had a crack at putting a couple of live bands on including Shawn Lee, and getting J-Walk to play live after over ten years' apart.

To celebrate this momentous occasion we've got together with Track Brewing and Vertical Drinks to put on a party which also kicks off the opening of Manchester Beer Week. The venue for the party is Track (at the back of Piccadilly Station) it's a brewtap so expect great fresh beer alongside some of our favourite music new and old.

At this point we'd like to thank Tom Clarke who's designed every poster we've had, often at the drop of a hat and for no more than some ale and scan.  He's even done a re-up of one of our favourite posters to celebrate.

We hope you can make it down, it's been a great ten years' and we'd love to celebrate it with as many of our friends as possible, hey. and it's a Friday too!

Here's to the next ten!

Eighty Six live at Magic Rock with Nick Ellis

This Sunday it's the first run out of the year for our very irregular Eighty Six parties. We're delight to heading over the pennines to play at one of favourite breweries, Magic Rock.

Joining Jif, Jeff and TC at the Magic Rock Tap Social will be Liverpool singer songwriter Nick Ellis. Music starts at 3pm, with Nick on stage at 6pm and the tap closes at 9pm. Entry is free.

We've played tracks from Nick's debut album Daylight Ghosts and his EP Grace & Dagger on our shows and Nick joined us for a short live set in Chorlton last summer. You can hear more of Nick on his Bandcamp.

Thanks to Rich Norgate for the amazing artwork.

Sounds of Eighty Six, Volume 45 with William France

We made it down to the basement to record another edition of the show and for this one we were joined in the studio by special guest, William France.

Will is well know in craft beer circles for his involvement in some of Manchester's finest bars, such as Common, Port St, The Beagle; managing events like IMBC, Tap & Pin (Sheffield) and working at brewers Cloudwater and Summer Wine.

We've had a connection with Will both musically and as friends, DJ'ing at his venues and the events he's involved with. He's also come from behind the bar to play at Eighty Six, both on the show and with us at the Outlaws Yacht Club.

On Saturday 19th of November, we're playing the afternoon session at the Brewers Market at Canal Mills over in Leeds. So to give you a taster of the event Will came down and played a few selections alongside us.

In the words of L.F.O. We Are Back!

Finally, we all made it down to the studio to record another show. Many thanks to all those of you who got in contact with us, asking us if we were ok? or if we'd gone and hung up our headphones and retired! It's mainly been down to a combination of life generally getting in the way of recording and we've had a few studio technical issues along the way.

However, this week we did it and it felt really good to be back recording after so many months away. The good news is we've now got a new amp, (after the old one gave up the ghost) and we've also got some shows and events planned in for the next few weeks. Obviously, there's been a huge amount of new music released over the last few months and we've got plenty of it we'd like to share with you. So as we've waited so long, let's get going.

Support is from Aficionado's Moonboots and Jason Boardman.  You can also catch No Zu in London playing two dates over the bank holiday weekend before they head to France.

Band on stage around 9pm. Tickets here. Well done to Sarah on the great poster too!

One Deck Wednesday Social

If you're feeling in a bit of a mid-week slump or just missing hearing our podcasts (while we take a short break) Jif, Jeff and TC will be hosting the legendary One Deck Session down at the Electrik bar in Chorlton, this coming Wednesday evening (25th May).

We've played at the One Deck Sessions a few of times over the years. It started life a Sunday evening journey into the selections you'd play at home with the strict house rules of one deck and no headphones!

It's Jif's first time playing out after getting married to Rachel while we were out in Copenhagen so we've got plenty to celebrate. There's also an exhibition of Stan Chow artwork currently on display in the bar too.

Music from 8pm, come down and join us.

An evening with Shawn Lee & Carwyn Ellis

Listeners to our shows will need no introduction to the talents of Carwyn Ellis and Shawn Lee; two of the most highly rated producers and artist in the UK today.

Carwyn can usually be found leading his band Colorama and making solo cinematic electronic music under the Italian guise of Zarelli. He's also recently co-produced, co-written and arranged Sarah Cracknell's Red Kite LP as well as producing albums for Nev Cottee and Edwin Collins.

Whilst Shawn is one of the most prolific artist we know, releasing around 30-35 albums to date and playing and owning just about every instrument going.  He records as Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra and also makes film and computer game soundtracks whilst collaborating with indie artist AM as AM & Shawn Lee and with London electronic group  'Psapp'.  Currently, we're loving playing his West End Coast LP which he's recorded and produced with Andy Platts under the guise Young Gun and Silver Fox.

The good news is these two will be hitting the road in February for a pair of intimate gigs in Manchester and London. We're going to be heading along to the Manchester gig; taking place in the intimate surroundings of the Sacred Trinity Church in Salford.

If you've not been to a gig here before (you're in for a treat) as it's a great little venue to enjoy music in..... plus the music loving Vicar is very welcoming, getting a few barrels of local ale to sell at the bar in the Church entrance!

Make sure you get in early as we're also hearing John Stammers will also be performing. There were only 15 tickets left when I last looked, so don't miss out!

Manchester: tickets
London: tickets

It was great to be back in the studio after the festivities and we hope that 2016 is a good year for all of us!

We kick started the new year with all 3 of making it down to the studio! As always at this time of year we caught up on some of the music we'd either not managed to play in December or missed during the last year.  The show starts with a cover of the Bowie classic, Rebel Rebel and a moment of contemplation with the mournful sounds of the Croatian sea organ.

We then get stuck into the brilliant forthcoming Woods LP and there's also a great track from Piccadilly Record's album of the year by Julia Holier. Look out for tracks from the equally amazing 2015 albums by Bill Ryder Jones and also King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard. There's a taster of the new Trolls Hammer LP on Music for Dreams.  Plus Jif's been having a clear out after 35 years' of collecting so listen out for a few forgotten gems from deep in his collection.
